Kona
8 month old male
Located in foster care
Kona was born on August 18, 2020, He's long, lean, athletic, and is at ease being an indoor cat. He's nearly all black with a smattering of single white hairs like a constellation, and deep yellow eyes. He's comfortable with people, uses the scratching post (after a few reminders), and exhibits appropriate litter box behaviour. He's a voracious eater, but isn't interested in kibble at all - although I haven't tried too hard to convince him. He is a bit skittish and anxious, and does NOT like to be picked up, but he's sweet and affectionate when you've earned his trust. While I don't know his responses to dogs, kids, or other cats, I would say that he would do better without loud or aggressive kids (although he's fine with our gentle early teenagers) and I suspect that he'd be fine with other cats. I suspect Kona would do just fine with a dog after a transition period, especially if it had a laid-back temperament.
Kona is a thoughtful, reserved kind of guy. He's curious and intelligent, and will be fascinated by whatever you're doing. He'll follow you to your destination, poke his nose in your business, and exhibit great interest in whatever is happening. If you open a cupboard, he'll want to know what's in there, and he'll put some sustained effort into figuring out how to open it himself. If he had a job, he'd be an engineer, figuring out how stuff works. He sleeps less than his sister, and spends his alone time prowling the room, looking for something to get into and 'mrrrow'ing to himself, as though he's having a conversation. He's vocal, but it's not loud or demanding. He's just having a chat with himself.
Kona is the kind of guy who's a bit harder to get to know, but will love you if you earn it. It took quite a while for us to hear him purr or accept a pet, but within a few weeks he'll now come to sit with (or on) us on the sofa, purring and dozing beside us or between our ankles. He enjoys human company and gentle pets on his head and ears, but he's not going to be a cuddlebug.
Sometimes it seems like Kona is bored and needs engagement. He explores EVERYTHING and if he can't find anything to do, he becomes the pesky younger brother who annoys his sleeping big sister just for something to do. He'd do well in a home where there's a lot of interesting activity going on, possibly with a playmate to interact with, or where there are people around to amuse him. He'll respond well with continuity: people with predictable behaviour who are patient and move slowly while developing a trust relationship. I think he'll be a terrific sidekick and will settle into being a happy member of the family. He's a really interesting cat with a really intelligent demeanour. ... See MoreSee Less
